Who Are We?
SnuggleHose LLC began officially in January, 2003. There are two sisters running this little company, Rhonda Godding and Bonita Hunt. Rhonda was diagnosed with sleep apnea and began using a CPAP machine in June 2002. Utah is a desert state with very dry air. Dry nose and airways led to the acquirement of a humidifier for the CPAP. By October, the nights were getting colder and the warm, moist air from the humidifier was condensing in the cold CPAP tube and causing a lot of wake-up problems. Rhonda asked her sleep doctor what to do about this, and he told her that the only real solution was to run the hose under the bedclothes and try to keep it warmer to decrease condensation.
The sisters got together for Thanksgiving at Bonita's house. Bonita had a pile of unfinished fleece blankets she was working on for Christmas gifts. The idea was born… Why not make a soft, warm fleece blanket for the CPAP hose? It may not actually warm the hose but it would certainly make the cold hard thing easier to "snuggle" under the bedclothes! That is how SnuggleHose came to be.
They made a few extras, trying out different ways to attach them at the ends. Elastic, if it was tight enough to hold the cover in place, was too tight to get over the nozzle end without a real struggle. Rubber bands weren't tight enough either and the idea of a rubber band breaking right by your nose in the middle of the night did not seem like a good plan. Sewing ties to each end and using brightly colored yarn ties was tried. Finally velcro won out as the fastener of choice as it won't come off and get lost and it is easy to handle, even by people who may have decreased mobility in their hands.
Rhonda then gave a SnuggleHose to a friend with sleep apnea. She loved it, and said she doesn't know how she ever slept without it and would hate to have to sleep without it again. Rhonda showed it to her sleep doctor. He said, "This is great! I wonder if you could market this?" So, that is the story of how the SnuggleHose began. Rhonda and Bonita formed a company as partners and began the pleasant task of trying to share this little comfort device with every CPAP user in the world!
